Hi All,
This is for discussion of IT (AUP) policies for the assignment. I have included a 'starter' question for you, feel free to add new threads!
Powerful tools require careful management, they always have. The same power and force that makes a tool so effective can, in a single moment of inattention, quickly transform the tool from an implement of construction into a device of destruction. The maxim holds true whether the subject is a contractor - grade 7 - 1/4-inch circular saw or the Internet.
The same capacities and dynamism that make the Internet such a profound business tool also render it a potentially dangerous diversion. Used improperly, the Internet can subject every organisation to harassment claims, countless hours lost productivity and innumerable security leaks and vulnerabilities.

hey guys ,..read the article...is'nt it perfectly true.......how the employees misuse the faciility of internet provided to them........why employees and organnizations...lets take an example of our own academic blackboard..its like...most of the time used by students to download music.....watched online tennis worldcups and so on.....common guys lets face it ...we all do it......but its not right........its a total waste of money....invested in the technology by the organization and also our own time......technology as truly said is a two sided sword if used properly will ftech u lots of sucess and if nit then equal amount of losses..is'nt it?????????..wat do u guys think.........
Having an Internet POlicy is not a big issue for any organization and many organizations also do have an internet policy....but its about making the employees follow the policy......or for that matter students or other internet users.......We should understand the extent of loses that can be caused if we do not follow these policies...........company held lots of valuable information in thier computers.....a virus or a spyware attack can affect these information in seconds which may cause the company damage of millions.....i think this is a very critical issues and requires participation from both the sides that is employees and organization....the organization must make it really clear to each and every employee about what icepatble and wats not wats not.....also the employee as part of organization must be loyal to thm and abide to the policies enforecd on them.......after all if the organization is a sucessful..so will be the employee as well......
Hi, Its true that the user policies are important in organisations and are being misused now. I've came across some user policies during my internship programme as i had to sign the agreement documents, the Internet user policy was one of them (unsure, hardly remember) it's a part of AUP's but it was strict enough i guess! as it was only meant for business and profit purposes only and only applicable for registered users of that company. It's really hard to know sometimes that how many of them follow up the rules and regulations as mentioned in the acceptable user policy.
Yes Rugveda, It's really awful to see tht company suffers a huge loss just because of employee/employees who underestimate the user poilcies and surfs the restricted sites. I feel that interent policies are the best and should be implemented on strict basis like employees must be penalised if they do wrong and setting up high end monitoring systems which can avoid users doing wrong things at right time haha. I'm very excited to know more aboout this user policies. will be right back with some more info.
Technology is a two sided sword, I definitely agree with this sentence. Developing new technology shouldn't be the primary moto of an organisation but how well it is established and how well it is implemented and accepted by the fellow people is also very important.
wat you think guys??
am I right.
Reading the article provided.. guys 8 seconds is sufficient for an organisation to have a bad news thats really crazy
Well well coming up to usage of internet at work place gonna be a big discussion here

Misuse of technology is seen every in schools, organisations and other work places.
Do you think the organisation or employees who work are responsible for the damage done. According to me, its the procedure that the organisation follow does all the damage. When I say procedure that should be harsh like a dictator ship of the boss on the employees or procedure shouldn't be too liberal where one can access any information while it causes damage to an organisation.
Policy according to me should consider some ethical needs of employees and include some professional needs which are equally balanced where freedom of an individual is given the highest priority. I'll make it simple if you create a friendly environment in your organisation then employee's working ability will reach a vantage point for sure
Give a minute for yourself and think why people or employees who work for an organisation are misusing the technology. Let me pile up some points which are in my mind now.
1. Work load
2. Tensions
3. Work timings
4. Personal problems
( I know.. there is shouldn't be time for personal problems while working, but just give it a consideration)
All these factors come into play while people are working which may distract from their work and lead to do something else which is actually a miss use of time and money invested on it.
Guys hope I was correct in this issue, and if you want to add anything else apart from those I mentioned would love to see .

In addition to the points mentioned about Internet usage policies:
1. Better understanding with employees will help to overcome some percentage of loss.
2. Many companies release a booklet of their quarterly results stating their profit to their shareholders and customers, vice versa. Organisations have to release a booklet showing the loss occurred due to misuse of technology, this may warn the employees and control their usage of internet.
3. Organisations have to design some training programs where all the employees are clearly explained about the technology how well it can be utilized and the same way how much damage it can cause if misused.
[In a extreme case
At least, they will be in a position to judge the problem and can solve in some cases.]
